As well as the SAT and ACT, many students (primarily in the US and Canada) take Advanced Placement (AP) exams as part of the application process for colleges and universities. AP exams are the culmination of year-long AP courses, designed to assess students at a level equivalent to an introductory college course in a wide range of subjects. The scores from these tests are used by universities in the admission process and due to their advanced curricula are viewed as highly important as they demonstrate a student's ability to handle college-level material. Students who score highly on AP exams may even be awarded course credit by colleges and universities.
